This and that

An interesting thing this Voki! I came across it in Mr Lindsay’s wiki, unfortunately I couldn’t embed mine it in this blog. Bit it works in Pbwiki.

Mr Lindsay’s pupils read stories and he placed the recordings as a podcast in his wiki. Lovely. I’d love to hear what my children read in school too. Unfortunately they don’t seem to think new technology is OK for children and schools. (Mr Lindsay stores his podcasts at Gcast.)

Following his links I’ve come to Writing Prompt Generator. It’s a generates objects (or even a plot) and then students can write stories about them. I like it.

Blogs and some interesting links

ġeðēode is a blog I came across when following the link to information on a masterclass in corpus linguistics organized by the University of Chicago (advertised in the Corpora Forum). The blog posts are written by Steven Clancy and his posts led me to some interesting sites. Take Open Culture, for example, a collection of foreign language learning podcast collection that offers links to podcast lessons in 23 languages! Or Quizlet, a great site that helps you learn vocabulary lists (it’s free!). Definitely a blog I’ll keep an eye on.

Then Vida posted a link to the Open University’s Open Learn website. Their LabSpace is a real treasure!

Those who feel adventurous and like playing vocabulary games (BTW, the words can be quite rare) may find Chart of JeuxDeMots fun. It’s available in French too.

Wikidot

I’ve learnt about a new wiki provider from Nancy (Thank you, Nancy!): it’s Wikidot. I like their dots (my Hungarian blood I guess :) ), the templates are lovely and the wiki seems simple to manage. It also has a built in forum facility which is great, you just have to activate it. I registered a wiki but I still need to explore it in greater detail. So far I’ve been using only PBWikis and Wikispaces and liked both.

EVO 2008

There’s still some time left to register for a session at EVO 2008. The online workshops range from those for beginners to those for the more advanced. I hope to be able to qualify for one as well. :)
